Preparation – Nerves

The number one thing to learn about nerves is that they are a natural reaction experienced by most speakers, whether they are extroverts, introverts or somewhere in between.

Mark Twain is credited with the comment that:

“There are only two types of speakers in the world. 1. The nervous, and 2. The liars.”

If you are feeling nervous you are not weird or unusual; in fact, you are normal. Even Prince Harry, who would have been groomed from birth for public life, confesses to anxiety about speaking in public.

One of the most useful tips about nerves then is to accept them. Don’t try to fight nerves. They will pass.
